The March issue (No. 3, 2026) of Uzbekistan's reputable scientific electronic journal Economic Development and Analysis has published a scholarly article by Avazbek Khalbekov, Head of Department at the Centre for Sustainable Development, entitled "The Evolution of Scientific Perspectives on Sustainable Regional Development."
The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the stages in the formation and development of scientific views on the sustainable development of regions. In particular, the theoretical foundations of the sustainable development concept across different historical periods, aspects related to economic and social factors, and the key factors influencing regional development are examined from a scientific standpoint.
Furthermore, the article traces the gradual formation of the scientific and practical content of the concept of sustainable development and its place within contemporary economic systems. The author substantiates the evolutionary process of the sustainable development theory, its classical and modern approaches, and its significance in ensuring the economic sustainability of regions.
Within the scope of the research, the factors influencing regional development are analysed — including such indicators as economic resources, infrastructure capacity, human capital, innovative activity, and the institutional environment. It is demonstrated that the harmonious and integrated development of these factors plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable development of a region.
The article analyses the scientific ideas and concepts advanced at various stages of sustainable development theory and examines the possibilities for their practical application. The opportunities for achieving economic growth, efficient resource utilisation, and social stability through the application of scientific approaches to regional development are substantiated.
The research findings indicate that an in-depth study of scientific perspectives on sustainable regional development and their practical implementation constitute an important factor in ensuring the economic sustainability of territories, enhancing social well-being, and strengthening the competitiveness of the national economy. In this regard, the article puts forward practical recommendations for the effective use of modern scientific approaches and the improvement of governance mechanisms for sustainable regional development.
