Technology Takes the Wheel

24-02-2026 52

In March, the world's first fully driverless taxi service will be launched in Dubai. The project is being implemented under the leadership of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, with the participation of Pony.ai, Uber, and Baidu. In the initial phase, 100 autonomous vehicles will begin operations on the city's roads in real traffic conditions.

The essence of the project is to introduce a driverless taxi service summoned via a mobile application. The vehicles navigate using artificial intelligence and sensors, automatically optimising routes and adapting to real-time traffic conditions. The initiative is aimed at improving road safety, reducing congestion, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

The strategic significance of this initiative lies in the fact that Dubai is transitioning autonomous transport from laboratory trials to an integral component of daily urban infrastructure. Subsequent phases envision a substantial increase in the number of autonomous vehicles and the automation of a considerable share of the city's transport system by 2030.
