Rational Use of Water — An Important Factor in Sustainable Development

23-03-2026 155

The rational and efficient use of natural resources, and in particular the conservation and protection of water resources, is one of the most important conditions for ensuring sustainable development. For this reason, modern approaches to water conservation are being widely introduced in developed countries around the world, including the Republic of Korea.

In this direction, the practice of collecting rainwater and reusing it in urban infrastructure holds particular significance. Systems for collecting, purifying, and reusing rainwater for technical purposes have been put into operation in urban areas, thereby ensuring the efficient use of water resources. In particular, through automatic irrigation systems installed on road surfaces, the collected and processed water is distributed in the form of fine droplets, simultaneously performing several important functions: preventing the overheating of asphalt surfaces during the summer, reducing air dust levels, and improving the urban environment.

At the same time, the use of rainwater and recycled technical water in these systems, rather than drinking water, is of great importance for conserving water resources, preventing waste, and ensuring ecological sustainability. The experience of the Republic of Korea demonstrates that, through the application of innovative solutions in urban infrastructure, it is possible to conserve natural resources, maintain ecological balance, and achieve sustainable development.
