Converting Agricultural Waste into a Low-Carbon Energy Source

12-03-2026 52

Honeywell has introduced an advanced technology that converts agricultural and forestry waste into ready-to-use renewable fuel for hard-to-decarbonise sectors, including maritime transport.

The technology enables the production of low-carbon maritime fuel, gasoline, and sustainable aviation fuel from inexpensive and widely available biomass feedstocks — such as wood and agricultural residues.

For maritime transport, this drop-in fuel represents an economically viable and less carbon-intensive alternative to conventional fuel oil. By virtue of its higher energy density compared to many existing biofuel types, this renewable fuel can extend the range of motorboats, personal watercraft, and other vessels without requiring costly engine modifications.

The technology developed by Honeywell may play a significant role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, this solution contributes to diversifying energy sources and increasing the share of clean energy under SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) through the production of renewable and low-carbon fuel.
