Mahalla — An Effective Mechanism for Sustainable Development

02-12-2025 54

On 1–2 December 2025, the Sustainable Development Centre organised a practical seminar for chairpersons of mahalla citizens assemblies in the Khorezm region and the city of Tashkent, on the theme «The Role of the Mahalla Sevens System in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Uzbekistan — 2030 Strategy».

The seminar presented the substance and priority directions of the Uzbekistan — 2030 Strategy, approved by Presidential Decree No. PF–158 of 11 September 2023, as well as its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Strategy core objectives include: sustained economic growth, elevating education and healthcare to international standards, improving the environmental situation, and ensuring just governance and national security.

It was emphasised that the mahalla sevens system enables residents day-to-day issues to be resolved at the local mahalla level, thereby ensuring socio-economic stability and fostering cooperation among family, school, and mahalla. The organic connection between such SDG areas as poverty reduction, quality education, gender equality, and sustainable communities, and the ongoing mahalla reform process, was also highlighted.

During the seminar, questions from mahalla chairpersons and community activists were addressed, and additional explanations were provided on the practical linkages between the SDGs and the national strategy.
