On 2 March 2026, a scientific-practical seminar was held in Tashkent for mahalla chairpersons on the topic 'The Role of the Mahalla System in the Context of Wide-Ranging Reforms Being Implemented in Uzbekistan'.
The event emphasised that the mahalla institution is receiving particular attention in the areas of sustainable societal development, improving public welfare, and making state governance more people-centred. In particular, it was noted that the 'mahalla sevens' system plays a vital role in resolving the problems of the population on the ground, strengthening social stability, and enhancing civic participation.
The distinct role of the mahalla in reducing poverty, ensuring quality education, promoting healthy lifestyles, achieving gender equality, developing sustainable communities, and ensuring peace and justice was also underscored. The President's declaration of 2026 as the 'Year of Mahalla Development and Social Progress' was assessed as a strategic decision aimed at elevating the role of the mahalla in state and public life to a new level. For the mahalla is not merely a territorial unit, but a social space that embodies the traditions of solidarity, tolerance, and mutual assistance of our people.
