On 29 April 2026, the Centre for Sustainable Development organised a scientific-practical roundtable in the Kibray District of Tashkent Region, bringing together mahalla (community-level self-governance body) activists, civil society institutions, and representatives of the education sector. The event was held within the framework of the Year of Mahalla Development and Community Advancement, dedicated to the role of the mahalla in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, under the theme "The Role of the Mahalla in the Social Life of New Uzbekistan."
The roundtable was organised in collaboration with the chairs of district self-governance bodies, technical college faculty and students, as well as representatives of non-governmental non-profit organisations. This approach enhanced the practical significance of the event and enabled the consolidation of perspectives and expertise from representatives of diverse segments of society within a single forum.
Over the course of the event, the legal and institutional foundations of the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan, as well as their alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, were comprehensively examined. In addition, international experience was analysed, and views were exchanged on effective mechanisms for the development of the mahalla institution. Participants were also provided with detailed information on projects being implemented by the Centre and their practical outcomes.
During the discussions, proposals and initiatives put forward by participants were considered in a spirit of open dialogue, with substantive observations made regarding the further enhancement of public participation and the improvement of targeted engagement mechanisms at the mahalla level. This demonstrated clearly that the event extended beyond the mere exchange of information and was oriented towards the development of practical solutions.
The second — practical — segment of the event was equally substantive. In particular, within the framework of the national project "Yashil Makon" ("Green Space"), a tree-planting initiative was conducted on the grounds of educational institutions in the Bostanliq District, with the active participation of students and teaching staff, during which a number of fruit tree saplings were planted.
This initiative served not only the cause of environmental protection, but also manifested as a significant practical step aimed at cultivating an ecological culture among young people, fostering a conscientious attitude towards nature, and reinforcing a sense of collective responsibility.
