On 9 April 2026, in the framework of the ongoing national "Year of Mahalla Development and Community Advancement," a remote roundtable discussion was organised to examine the role of the mahalla institution in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Conducted via the Zoom application, the event brought together 70 participants, including the chairpersons of 40 mahalla citizens' assemblies in the Chinaz district and relevant sector specialists.
The event opened with a keynote address by Abdуmanop Tulyaganov, Head of the Tashkent Regional Branch of the Centre for Sustainable Development, on the topic "Mahalla — An Active Unit of Society." The speaker provided a scientifically grounded argument for the primacy of the population's social well-being in sustainable development processes, emphasising the need to conduct this work in harmony with economic and ecological criteria. Centre expert Shodiyar Azizov then elaborated on the implementation of national goals and tasks outlined in the sustainable development strategy through 2030, placing special emphasis on the importance of active cooperation between state institutions and the population, as well as civic engagement in societal progress.
During the practical analysis, Sherzod Kuliboyev, Chairman of the Chinaz District Mahalla Association, briefed participants on the current situation in the region, noting that the majority of the 151 applications received from residents pertained to social and financial assistance. The resolution of 80 percent of applications on-site — made possible by the establishment of independent funds at the disposal of mahallas — was acknowledged as a tangible outcome of the ongoing reforms. It was further reported that, through state-directed investment, coverage of the district with drinking water is planned to reach 95–100 percent by the end of the year.
The dialogue also focused on environmental issues and the state of infrastructure. The chairperson of the Ko'tarma mahalla citizens' assembly stressed the need for a systematic approach to the maintenance of saplings planted under the "Yashil Makon" project, resulting in an agreement to conduct a community oversight inspection in May. The chairperson of the A. Navoiy mahalla citizens' assembly proposed involving construction organisations in landscaping works around multi-storey residential buildings and expanding green spaces. At the conclusion of the event, in cooperation with the mahalla association and the branch of the Centre for Sustainable Development, relevant measures were identified to strengthen ties with the District Council of People's Deputies and to resolve existing issues on the ground.
