The Role of Ecology in the Socio-Political Life of New Uzbekistan

08-04-2026 185

On 7 April 2026, a scientific-practical roundtable was held in the assembly hall of the Music School of Parkent District, organised by the Tashkent Regional Branch of the Centre for Sustainable Development in cooperation with the district administration. Conducted within the framework of the Year of "Mahalla Development and Community Advancement," the event was dedicated to the theme "The Role of Ecology in the Socio-Political Life of New Uzbekistan."

The event was attended by nearly 200 participants, including mahalla chairpersons, members of the "mahalla council of seven," and representatives of youth organisations. During the dialogue, A. Tulyaganov, Head of the Regional Branch of the Centre for Sustainable Development, placed particular emphasis on the socio-economic and ecological significance of the Sustainable Development Goals. Centre expert Sh. Azizov analysed the role of ecological sustainability in the achievement of national goals and objectives, as well as the mechanisms for public participation in this process.

The roundtable was marked by lively debate and substantive legal consultations. As the practical component of the event, 50 fruit tree seedlings were planted under the national project "Yashil Makon" ("Green Space").

Additionally, a public monitoring exercise was conducted during the event to assess the current state of affairs in the sector. In particular, the condition of trees previously planted under the "Yashil Makon" project was examined with the participation of composer N. Dadaev, a resident of Istiqbol mahalla, and other community activists. The findings revealed that approximately 80% of the seedlings were on the verge of dying due to deficiencies in the irrigation system and the absence of systematic oversight by responsible organisations.

To address the problem, a substantiated proposal was put forward by S. Kutiboev, Chairman of the Citizens' Assembly of Qursoy mahalla. It was noted that the abolition of the previously existing position of community worker had become the primary cause of the neglected state of the trees. The necessity was emphasised of restoring the system of assigning at least one community worker to each mahalla, responsible for the care, watering, and protection of trees, with corresponding remuneration. It was further stressed that this measure would not only resolve ecological problems, but also contribute to reducing unemployment and preventing poverty at the local level.
