Artificial intelligence and human interests

29-09-2026 34

Today, the use of artificial intelligence in education, information, service delivery, and other fields has created new opportunities for human life. The growing use of chatbots that interact with people, educational programmes, information-processing systems, and technologies capable of performing complex tasks also requires attention to such issues as their alignment with human interests, the reliability of information, human rights, and equal opportunities.

From this perspective, discussions held on 4–5 September 2026 in Rome within the framework of the United Nations addressed the impact of artificial intelligence on human civilisation, development, and human dignity. The event emphasised that technological development should be aligned with human values, ethical responsibility, and human rights. One of the principles put forward by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres likewise focuses on ensuring that technology serves humanity.

The discussions considered not only the potential of artificial intelligence to expand educational opportunities, develop human potential, and support sustainable development, but also its impact on the information environment. In particular, attention was drawn to the spread of false and misleading information, the need to maintain trust in information sources, and the importance of ensuring social cohesion.

The representation of different languages, cultures, and sources of knowledge within artificial intelligence systems is another important issue. If digital technologies are primarily adapted to the needs of only certain languages or societies, disparities in access to and opportunities for their use may emerge. Therefore, the principles of equal opportunities and inclusiveness need to be taken into account in the development of artificial intelligence.

The discussions in Rome addressed not only the technological and economic aspects of artificial intelligence, but also its impact on the role and responsibility of individuals in society. It was emphasised that concepts such as a dignified life, moral choice, and responsibility must retain their significance even in the context of technological development.

Alongside the expanding use of artificial intelligence, there are also issues related to its impact on the labour market and human activity. These include a potential decline in the demand for human labour in certain professions and types of activity, excessive reliance on technology, and circumstances that may affect independent human thinking. There is also a possibility that the reflection of inappropriate approaches embedded in algorithms used for artificial intelligence-based decision-making may affect the interests of certain groups.

These opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence demonstrate the need to discuss its impact on society alongside the development of the technologies themselves. The dialogues conducted within the framework of the United Nations are planned to be expanded in 2027 with the participation of countries and local communities. In this process, alongside the technical capabilities of artificial intelligence, the perspectives of different societies, as well as issues concerning human dignity and common interests, will also be discussed.

As the scope of artificial intelligence continues to expand, it is not sufficient to assess the impact of technology on human life solely in terms of its technical capabilities. Alongside its application in education and the information sphere, aspects related to human rights, equal opportunities, trust in information, and ethical responsibility must also be taken into consideration.
