Space Initiatives of New Uzbekistan on the Path to Sustainable Development

17-02-2026 40

In recent years, technological advancement and innovative competition at the global level have entered a new phase, elevating space technologies to the status of a strategically significant sector. Uzbekistan, too, is developing a systematic approach in this area, with initiatives in satellite technologies and space research advancing steadily. The objectives of launching satellites and training the country's first national astronaut, put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, are directly aligned with the country's sustainable development strategy — and specifically with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

The practical use of space data in our country began relatively recently; nevertheless, notable tangible results have been achieved within a short period. A state space monitoring system has been established and is currently used actively by more than 10 government bodies and all regional administrations (hokimiyats). The threefold increase in demand for remote sensing data over the past five years demonstrates the steadily growing importance of space technologies in the economy and the public administration system.

Developing national space infrastructure has been identified as a priority task. In particular, advancing systems for satellite management, space data processing, and their effective practical application serves to strengthen the country's information sovereignty and technological capacity. This, in turn, enables more precise analysis of economic processes and more efficient management of state resources. The first scientific nanosatellite — the 6U-format Mirzo Ulugbek project — has been developed, with its successful completion targeted for 2028. It should be emphasised that the sectoral reforms are of considerable importance from the perspective of advancing national engineering schools, enhancing scientific capacity, and training highly qualified specialists.

Overall, these space technology development initiatives represent strategic steps aimed at strengthening the innovative potential, scientific capacity, and international standing of New Uzbekistan. Unfolding in harmony with sustainable development principles, these processes lay a solid foundation for the country's long-term advancement.
